When to use ICE or Heat Different types of aches and pains require different treatments Should you use ICE or HEAT therapy for your body pain? Ice is your ally when you suffer an injury - remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. If, for example, you think you've sprained your ankle, ice the affected area right away (but for no longer then 20 minutes). Ice slows blood circulation and reduces the pain. If your injury doesn't improve after a few days, seek professional help. Heat relaxes your muscles and is most useful for chronic conditions such as a backache or menstrual cramps. Just be careful not to burn yourself- test the temperature of the heating device before you put it on your body. |
