Official Recommendations To develop and maintain cardio respiratory fitness, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that you work out 3-5 days per week at 65% - 90% of your maximum heart rate (MHR) for 20-60 minutes. (if you're just starting out, some of your cardio may fall into the 55% - 65% MHR range.) If weight loss is your goal, ACSM recommends that you participate in aerobic activity for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
